The Village Backwater Cruise or Gramam package, is a one-day programme that includes village backwater cruise, traditional food and local sightseeing like pot making, coconut oil extraction, coir carpet industry, Khadi handloom weaving, etc by road.
The guests are taken to a nearby village, Vaikom by car/coach, a 45-minutes journey from Ernakulam. Here a reception is arranged in a traditional house after which one can enjoy the lifestyle of the villagers and village backwater cruise through narrow canals, river, lakes and lagoon for 3 hours with a local guide.
Vaikom is 30 kms south east of Kochi. Since there are no industries here, the village is free from all types of pollution. The main occupation of the villagers is making ropes with coconut fiber, mat weaving with leaves of wild-pineapple collecting sand from river-bed, fishing and farming. The cruise starts from the narrow canals of 4feet in depth and then it enters the main river, which is 10-12 feet deep. Since the river originates from high ranges, it is clean and not salty.
